Meanwhile on planet Earth . . .
The very first, and totally not the last, “deepfake” crime has been committed.
If you are not familiar with the whole “deepfake” term . . . no worries, neither were we.
“Deepfake” is the term for fake, but convincing, audio or video that is created using artificial intelligence software.
No doubt you have seen some examples of videos online where software made famous or other notable people say random things.
Apparently, earlier this year thieves were able to use the “deepfake” technology in an actual robbery!
The smartypants criminals who should have been using their digitally advanced intellect for good called up a British energy company and used software that simulated the voice of an executive within the company.
The employee the criminals spoke with truly believed these requests to be real from their actual boss, even though they admitted they were strange requests, but rolled with it because everything was so believable.
The voice was so lifelike to the point that even the boss’s exact tone, cadence, and German accent were replicated to perfection.
So, the employee did what the “boss” was saying, and wired the thieves more than $240,000 to a bank account in Germany to avoid “late payment fines.”
Authorities are still investigating.
