Meanwhile in Canada . . .
An off-duty officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, John Ferguson, was out walking his pup Lewis, a Great Dane, when a couple of men complimented the dog’s size and beauty.
When John, the Mountie, turned to talk to the men, he recognized the two as ESCAPED CONVICTS from a bulletin issued by West Shore RCMP.
The two men, Zachary Armitage (30) and James Lee Busch (42), had escaped a couple of days earlier from William Head Institution in Metchosin, a minimum-security prison on Vancouver Island.
The off-duty Mountie alerted on-duty officers in the area who came out an made the arrest.
John shared, “Lewis and I went for an extra long walk to follow them.” He continues, “They seemed really relaxed, the way they were talking to Lewis, it seemed they were out for a leisurely walk.”
The escaped convicts were re-arrested, turned over to West Shore RCMP and sent back to court to appear on their new charges of being unlawfully at large.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) also confirmed they would be reviewing the security level of the two inmates — who are violent criminals currently serving time on some pretty heavy charges — and reassess their risk to public safety.
Oh, and Lewis, the 145 lb Great Dane, was made an honorary member of the West Shore RCMP for his help in capturing these criminals.
Lewis the great dane and Sgt. John Ferguson are to thank for spotting the escaped inmates- after they stopped to comment on the dogs size. https://t.co/QVF5s8zhYu pic.twitter.com/HwWpKaPJ4a
