Why Eric Church Doesn’t Use Hooks on His Songs

Eric Church has never really been the type of artist that will do what he’s told, just to have a hit on the radio . . .  and that includes using hooks on his songs.

Most artists would never admit this, but they pretty much live and die by how many hits they have on the radio, and Nashville producers believe the key to a hit song is the hook. Song hooks are what people love, right?

Not Eric Church.

His songs are the type that sometimes may not grab you right away, but once you’re in, you’ll keep coming back for more.

The secret? Church says it’s allowing the songs to have a “huge amount of space.”

“That’s my biggest beef with Nashville.  They have studio guys who try to find a hook or a part.  [But] sometimes the silence or space is the part.  The coolest part is non-part.  Or non-solo.  Don’t put a [stupid] solo there.  Let it be,” says sunglassed-up Country stud.

Eric promises we can expect “a lot of space” on the songs in his new album, “Desperate Man”, out FRIDAY!!

As for his favorite video of all time: It’s his “Desperate Man” video, because he loved the “shady characters” he and his band got to portray.
