Why Change The Design?

You ever go down one of those rabbit holes and what you ended up reading about had nothing to do with your starting point?  Well, I had one of those moments the other day.  I need a headlight assembly for our 2010 Prius, I ended up reading about why Heinz’s redesigned the ketchup bottle after over a 100 years of having to take a knife and stick it up in the bottle just to get some out.  It turns out, in the late 90’s burger and hot dog sales were slumping, with that, it meant a slack in condiment sales, enter the world of ketchup.  So, how can you get the masses to eat more ketchup?  It’s not like you eat the stuff straight, you eat it, say on a burger.  Well Heinz’s may have saved not only their hides with this idea, they may have single handedly saved burgers.  So they made the bottle, squeezable and upside down.  That’s it, a simple redesign of how we utilize the ketchup seemed to not only increase sales but also helped the burger and hot dog market tick up in sales as well.

That’s the rabbit hole I went down the other day.  No, I still haven’t found my 2010 Prius headlight assembly, but I now know why the redesign.  If you wish to go even deeper, here’s a jumping off point, just click here.
