Evidently, if you try to use Flex Fuel in your vehicle at higher altitude, it may sputter. I had no idea. So I had filled up the truck with the flex fuel when we went to the Smokey’s a few weeks back. Well we decided to go up to Clingmans Dome with is one of the highest points in the Smokey’s. So we get up to the top and I let off the gas and it starts acting like it’s going to die. Rough idle but no check engine light so I thought it was just a one off, so We find a parking space and again I let off the gas and the sputtering comes back. Well I didn’t want to get towed down from Clingmans Dome all the way back to Gatlinburg so I told Ruthanna we are heading back down. We get maybe a 1000 feet down and everything smooths right out. So I start wondering about the gas. Maybe water but it wasn’t constant idle, chip issue, what? So I spend the next couple of hours googling it and I just happen to run across this little write up about using flex fuel in higher altitudes and some vehicles didn’t like it. So I did find out it takes more oxygen for the spark when running flex and so that’s what it was. If you are going to road trip up into the mountains and you see a flex fuel pump, I would stay away from it. Evidently it’s not every vehicle but I can tell you our F150 hats flex up high. Just a little heads up.
