Time to Binge-Watch What You’ve Been Missing

More time at home means more time to check out shows you haven’t yet had the opportunity (or desire) to watch before. If you get down with that binge-watching lifestyle, or want to try your hand at it, the USA Today Entertainment team put together a massive list of options to get your streaming on.

As the (self-proclaimed) resident binge-watching connoisseur, below are some of the shows Jai totally agrees on checking out . . . depending on your mood and what you’re looking for:

When you’re looking for some joy . . .

  •  “Gilmore Girls” (Netflix): Sure those Gilmores deal with their share of drama, but the upbeat show with the quick-witted and even quicker paced dialogue is full of feel goods.
  • “Parks and Recreation” (NetflixHulu or Amazon): Amy Poehler is a straight up KWEEN as Leslie Knope, and the rest of the cast (we’re talking Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt, Aubrey Plaza, Aziz Ansari, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Rashida Jones, and more) bring serious laughs with the dead-panned shenanigans in the most perfect way possible.
  • “Schitt’s Creek” (Netflix): This is one of Jai’s favorite shows currently on TV and it’s all coming to an end before April is over (*can you hear her sobbing*). It’s about a super rich family who lose EVERYTHING except for a small town they bought as a joke. They relocate and rediscover the love they have for each other. It’s all kinds of feel goods with Eugene Levy, Cathrine O’Hara, Dan Levy (Father/Son duo Eugene and Dan are the masterminds behind this incredible show), and Annie Murphy who straight up steals the show as Alexis Rose. This is not one of those shows to have on in the background while you do other things, because so much of the humor is in the actions and reactions as well as the witty dialogue. The series finale airs Tuesday, April 7 . . . but there are six glorious seasons to enjoy).

When you’re looking to visit a magical world want to travel to a new world . . .

  •  “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (Hulu): Inspired by the stellar 1992 movie of the same name with Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry written by Joss Whedon . . . this TV series (also written by Whedon) stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as the stake wielding bad***, saving her community from evil. This show is EVERYTHING!!!
  • “Charmed” (Netflix): If you’ve never seen the OG version of “Charmed” with Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty (who was later replaced by Rose McGowan), and later in the series Kaley Cuoco. The show has the best of late 90s and early aughts fashion trends as the trio of witches battle demons and other supernatural beings while showcasing what it means to be family and have each others back.
  • “True Blood” (HBO Go/HBO NowAmazon): It’s the lustrously addicting vampire drama from HBO set in Louisiana with a stacked cast on a whole lot of hotness! Anna Paquin starts off seeming like an unassuming strength, but girlfriend is fierce! Also on the series are Alexander Skarsgaard and Joe Manganiello. Once you start, it’s really hard to stop.
  • “Supernatural” (Amazon PrimeAlright, so this suggestion wasn’t on the USA Today Entertainment list and that is just preposterous! Two super hot brothers who go around fighting against evil (and sometimes the good that are actually evil) to save the world in a ’67 Chevy Impala along with a stellar classic rock soundtrack for each episode . . . WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE?! The final season is currently airing on The CW, but you can catch up on all glorious fifteen seasons. (Oh, and TNT is always airing the episodes during the weekdays.)

When you’re looking for something funny the whole family can watch . . .

  •  “The Big Bang Theory” (local stations and TBS, available to buy digitally): This is a seriously fun show about a group of friends with some serious character development throughout the series. The introduction of new series regulars as the season roles through was such a welcome addition that everything flowed so incredibly. It’s like the aughts version of the nineties classic “Friends” (which is up next)!
  • “Friends” (local stations, TBS; available to buy digitally): Unfortunately, Netflix pulled this one (as they tend to do) and it won’t be streaming anywhere until the reunion debuts on HBO Max (which was supposed to happen in late Spring but that may be pushed back since filming has been postponed. Relive the glory days of the truly codependent friendships of Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross.
  • “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (Hulu):  It’s another workplace comedy in the vain of “Parks and Recreation” (mentioned above), but set at a police precinct. Andy Samberg is brilliant as Jake Peralta and Terry Crews steals the show as the sergeant . . . wait, actually Chelsea Peretti is the real show stealer as the hilariously quotable Gina Linetti. There is so much funny wrapped up in every episode, you won’t be sorry you checked it out.
  • “Golden Girls” (Hulu): Maybe you’ve never watched the shenanigans of Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia . . . or perhaps it’s been awhile . . . but definitely check out the humor between these mature(ish) friends. There’s actually some pretty raunchy and crude humor but it’s disguised so brilliantly that if you’re watching this with young ones, those jokes will go right over their head. This show was so ahead of its time!
  • “Modern Family” (Hulu; ABC, Wednesdays, 9 EDT/PDT; local stations and USA Network): Filmed borderline like a reality show with interview (or confessional) segments, this award winning series has a stacked cast of talented actors playing lovable characters with good hearts but not always common sense. The show is in its final season (the series finale airs April 8), but you can still stream all of the seasons.
  • “The Office” (Netflix): It’s the ultimate sitcom for anyone who works in an office (or anyone in general). It’s quotable, lovable characters will make you think of people in your own life (and possible workplace) with laughs rather than annoyances. If you’ve never watched it, it’s time to go see what all the hype is about. If you have watched it, it’s time to rewatch it again and notice the parts you missed because you were laughing so hard the first time.
  • “Speechless” (Hulu): Here’s a show that ended way before its time, with only three seasons, but it was so heartfelt with humor that it’s totally worth a watch. The series follows a family (led by the matriarch played by Minnie Driver) and how they navigate the world with the eldest sibling (who has cerebral palsy) in an honest look at disability along with satire. This is a feel good, laugh out loud show that someone needs to bring back.

When you’re looking for comedy after the littles go to bed . . .

  • “30 Rock” (AmazonHulu):  It’s a show about a show! Tina Fey, Tracey Morgan, Alec Bladwin and more star in this hilarious take about the behind the scenes shenanigans that go into creating a sketch comedy show (kind of like “Saturday Night Live”).
  • “Don’t Trust the B**** in Apt. 23” (Hulu): Here’s another show that was gone way too soon. Krysten Ritter plays an atrocious roommate play-girl type character whose best friend is a fictionalized version of real life actor James Van Der Beek (portrayed by the actor himself).
  • “Happy Endings (Hulu): It’s another group hangout series like “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory” with a super quirky cast of characters living in Chicago. It’s a little more on the slapstick kitschy side, but it’s oh so fun!!
  • “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (Hulu):  This one’s not for the easily offended, as it is pretty crass . . . but if you’re into that type of comedy the totally check it out! It’s about a group of friends (two of them are siblings and one is a sort-of father figure) who own/run a bar in Philly (that no one ever frequents so they just drink by themselves and get into mishaps themselves).
  • “Veep” (AmazonHBO Go/HBO Now):  When it comes to political satire, this is a show that does it right. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is brilliant and the other characters are written so beautifully wrong with the rest of cast totally nailing their roles.
  • “Friends From College” (Netflix): Another friendship-based series gone too soon, this one follows friends who are still significantly in each others lives (or come back into each others lives for some) twenty years after college and the happenings in their lives . . . no matter how shocking or dysfunctional.
