Teacher Gives Kids Zeroes for Missed Homework, Gets Fired

If you are a parent, or even if you’re not, please weigh in on this story on The Beaver 100.3 FM Facebook Page:  Was the teacher right to give zeroes for work not turned in  OR  was the school right in their decision to let her go?

Diane Tirado is a 52 year old woman who has been a teacher for almost two decades, but only recently started teaching in a Port St. Lucie, FL school this year.

Tirado gave her class an assignment at the beginning of the year to make an “explorer’s notebook,” and the students were given two weeks to complete the assignment.

However, some of the students didn’t turn in anything. Ergo, they were rewarded with zeroes on the assignment.

The thing is, the school has a policy that students are not to be graded any less than 50%, no matter what.

So, earlier this month, the school FIRED Tirado!

Tirado even says about it, “If there’s nothing to grade, how can I give somebody a 50%?”

Even the students are backing up Tirado, saying the policy is a dumb.  One student even posted to Facebook saying, “You showed me to be responsible for my work and the things that I do.” (If you ask us, that’s a good lesson kids need to learn)

Unfortunately, the school is standing by their firing, claiming the firing is not over the grades, but that Tirado is “defiant.”
