Smells Of Home

I have no idea why I started really thinking about this over the weekend but right now I’m really missing some of my childhood smells.  Most are foods of course, but not all.  My granny and paw-paw’s house had a certain smell to it.  I know some of it was the old coal burning furnace in the basement, but that’s not all of it. It just had a smell, and I was missing that over the weekend.  How the ground smelled when we would first till it up in the spring.  How the old barn smelled, even though except for some chickens, we hadn’t kept any horses in it for years.  Why do smells take you back?  I mean I have so many memories but there is something about a smell.  Homemade biscuits, or a pie, there are so many triggers that your brain has, and I remember reading a while back that smell was the biggest one for the brain.  I wasn’t 100% sold on it at the time, but I think I am now, and it all has come from just this past weekend and remembering so many smells from my childhood.
