OK, But How Much Sleep Do We Really Need

Sleep is important, but how much our bodies actually need varies by age.

In an effort to update sleep guidelines by age, the National Sleep Foundation picked the brains of six sleep experts and 12 other experts from medical associations, like the American Neurological Association, American Physiological Society, and American Academy of Pediatrics.

So, just how much sleep do we need?

  • Newborns (0-3 months) need 14-17 hours (previously recommended was 12-18 hours).
  • Infant (4-11 months) are suggested to get 12-15 hours (previously recommended was 14-15 hours).
  • Toddler (1-2 Years) need 11-14 hours (previously recommended 12-14 hours).
  • Preschool Age (3-5 Years) require 10-13 hours (previously recommended 11-13 hours).
  • School Age (6-13 Years) need 9-11 hours (previously recommended 10-11 hours).
  • Teen (14-17 Years) are encouraged to get 8-10 hours (previously recommended 8.5-9.5 hours).
  • Young Adult (18-25 Years) need 7-9 hours (this is a new category in the breakdown).
  • Adult (26-64 Years) should be getting 7-9 hours (no change from past guidelines).
  • Older Adult (65+ Years) should be getting 7-8 hours (this is also a new category).
