Nix These Energy Draining Habits

When the boredom of quarantine and social distancing (not to mention any depression you may be feeling because of the current health pandemic) is at an all time high and you are feeling exceptionally depleted of all energy, there are some additional bad habits that can totally deplete you of all energy.

Sure, some may be seemingly harmless, but others can be true energy vampires that suck out all the life from your good vibes and hinder your get-up-and-go.

Some of these tips are worth taking into your life post-pandemic, too!

If you find yourself feeling tired more often than not, and it is not due to an underlying illness or poor nutrition, you may find the culprit to be one of the following bad habits below:

1. Do you take things personally?  Being offended and angry all the time is a massive waste of energy.  Try to let more stuff roll off your back, and remember, how others treat you is more of a reflection of them than you.

2. Are you a constant worrier? OK, so this one is not an easy fix, but try your best to curb your worrying with action when possible.  In situations where you can address and issue head-on, do so.  If it is a problem that is out of your hands, try not to obsess over it.  There is a saying that goes something like, “change what you can, even if the only thing you can change is your attitude.”

3. Is your glass chronically half empty?  Negativity is a huge waste of energy.  Whether it is you complaining all the time or the people around you, your energy is going to feel depleted.

4. Do you overthink things?  Think something through, then follow through and quit second guessing yourself.  There is a new term called “FOBO” which means “fear of better options.”  Not sure how that’s different from “FOMO” (fear of missing out), but it is a huge energy waster!

5. Are you a gossiping drama queen/king?  When you create any kind of unnecessary drama in your life, or let the drama of others invade your mind, you’re going to feel sucked dry of energy.  When it comes to drama, ask yourself three questions –  Is it true?  Is it necessary?  Is it kind?

6. Are you a people pleaser?  Let’s be real, helping other is a wonderful and kind thing to do, but when you do it too much you stop focusing on yourself and your needs.  Think of helping others in life as the oxygen mask metaphor: When on an airplane, before take-off, the flight staff goes over safety rules and tells us that if we experience a loss in cabin pressure or oxygen to put your own mask on first and then help others.  Life is like that.  Help yourself first so you can better help others.

Less time around certain people may also help you to identify just who those energy vampires are.
