Man caught speeding wrong way down Wilma Rudolph Blvd

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A Clarksville man was arrested Friday, September 15 for allegedly driving 82 mph in the wrong direction on Wilma Rudolph Blvd. According to an arrest warrant, 42-year-old Gregory Sweeney was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when he was spotted by an officer. Police said he sped up when the officer activated his lights. The warrant states that approximately two minutes later Sweeney was being held at gunpoint by a state trooper on Dunbar Cave Rd. after he fled from his vehicle in the parking lot of 1801 Wilma Rudolph Blvd. After he was taken into custody, Sweeney allegedly told police he fled because he was scared of going to jail for a suspended license. Officers discovered his license had been suspended for failure to pay child support. Sweeney was charged with evading arrest, speeding, no proof of insurance, and driving on a suspended license. He was later charged with having contraband in a penal institution and simple possession when authorities discovered five grams of cocaine in his possession while he was being booked into jail. His bond was set at $30,000. A booking photo was not available at the time of this release.
