Man arrested for ramming police car, driving wrong way during chase

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A Clarksville man has been arrested for allegedly ramming his vehicle into a police car and driving down the wrong side of a major road during a chase. According to warrants, an officer parked at the Express Food Mart on Peachers Mill Rd. on Aug. 11 recognized a man who walked out of the store as Emmett Tolbert, who has several arrest warrants on file. The officer tried to stop Tolbert but he got into his vehicle. The officer said he pulled his vehicle behind Tolbert’s in an effort to stop him from leaving. At that point, the passenger got out of Tolbert’s vehicle. The officer and another agent got out of the vehicle and the officer attempted to approach Tolbert on the driver’s side of the car, but Tolbert then drove onto the patio and veered left. The officer said he feared he would be pinned between the vehicle and a nearby truck. Tolbert reportedly put his vehicle in reverse and slammed into the officer’s vehicle with enough force to push it. He then sped off toward Peachers Mill Rd. Another officer who was listening to radio traffic while traveling west on Dover Rd. toward Hwy 374 saw a white Dodge Charger driving the wrong way on the on-ramp to 374. The vehicle matched the description of Tolbert’s. The officer witnessed the vehicle drive down the on-ramp, cross two lanes of traffic in front of several vehicles, and then said it traveled east in the westbound lanes in the direction of oncoming traffic until the median ended. The warrant says the officer activated his emergency lights and tried to pull Tolbert over, who was driving at speeds of over 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. Throughout the course of the chase, Tolbert ran a red light at a busy intersection, swerved across two more lanes of traffic, nearly caused multiple crashes, and crossed the center line to pass three vehicles at one time on Dotsonville Rd. Tolbert was arrested and charged with evading arrest, two counts of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, vandalism, and driving on a revoked license. His total bond amount was $235,000.
