Networks have released their latest batch of “cancelled or renewed” shows and while some of them had the writing on the wall from day one, others were kind of a surprise.
Since the health pandemic had halted production on pretty much every show, and the true impact the novel coronavirus will have on the television industry is still a major “to be continued…” type of unknown — like a big cliffhanger of our favorite show — CBS is one of the networks who likes to stick with what they know is working, while others seem to be practicing a different method to their madness.
Here’s the current rundown the network just released with updates on the latest shows to be Renewed, Cancelled, or already had plans to end anyway.
CANCELLED:
“Tommy” – No second season for the Edie Falco cop drama on CBS.
“Broke” – Jai and her husband gave this one a shot, but it was easy to tell — before the pilot episode had even come to an end — that this one had absolutely zero staying power. The writing and acting was as empty as the characters’ bank accounts. CBS said NOPE.
“Man with a Plan” – If you didn’t know Matt LeBlanc was in another sitcom, apparently you’re not alone . . . not many others did either, and that could be a big reason this one was cancelled. Apparently no one was watching it. It’s a shame, too, because it’s actually a really funny show. Jai’s husband decided to check it out sometime during season 3 (it’s currently in it’s forth and final season, since it’s been cancelled) and Jai started watching it with him about a month ago. They both liked the CBS show and may have to be something they had to their binge list to check out all the previous episodes they missed.
“Carol’s Second Act” – No second season for this Patricia Heaton driven show on CBS.
“God Friended Me” – After two seasons, this comedy-drama is being unfriended by CBS before getting a third.
“Almost Family” – Fox has said goodbye to this family drama after the first season. It was cute enough, but just didn’t have the staying power (and the characters could get pretty whiny at times.
“Ray Donovan” – Season seven of the Liev Schreiber driven series wrapped in January, but looks like Showtime decided there would be no season 8.
RENEWED:
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” – So. Much. YES! Originally picked up by FOX and aired for 5 seasons, the network decided to cancel the show. That’s when, thankfully, NBC jumped in and were all like “DIBS!” The show just finished airing it’s seventh season and will be back for season 8, likely in 2021 once filming and production can get back to it later this year after the health pandemic dies down.
“This Is Us” – NBC is bringing the Pearson’s back. Season four came to a close the other month, but they’ll be back for both a Season five and a Season six.
“The Unicorn” – A solid cast of comedic actors and genuinely good, heartfelt writing may be what’s bringing back this CBS sitcom / dramedy back for a second season. Seriously, it’s a really cute show, led by Walton Goggins as the widowed dad (AKA The Unicorn) along with the Rob Corddry, Maya Lynn Robinson, Omar Benson Miller, and Michaela Watkins.
“Station 19” – The “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff is in for a forth season on ABC.
“The Neighborhood” – CBS is in for season three of the Cedric The Entertainer and Max Greenfield comedy. Definitely a fun show.
“Mom” – Allison Janney will return for another season in the CBS show. Cute show with a fun cast, but Anna Faris’s character is becoming a little too Alan Harper on “Two and a Half Men,” and not in a good way.
