Is Writing in Cursive a Relevant Skill?

Writing in Cursive . . . Outdated -or- Necessary Skill Set?

A lot of us grew up learning cursive in school, but many students after us didn’t get the opportunity when some schools deemed it unnecessary.

There are 14 states that still require kids to learn cursive, and four more are considering mandating it again.

Studies are showing that learning to write in cursive helps kids develop their motor skills; plus, writing things down reinforces what was just learned.

When a recent survey from YouGov asked 3,000 adults if cursive is still a valuable skill to have, over half said HECK YES!

Here are some of the survey results:

  1. 60% of adults said they learned cursive in school and still find it useful.
  2. 28% of adults said they learned cursive in school but do NOT find it useful.
  3. 3% of adults said they never learned cursive, but wished they had.
  4. 3% of adults said they never learned cursive, nor do they need to.
  5. 6% of adults weren’t sure.
