What is it about social media that has people so quick to jump to a nasty comment they’d only type online and not actually say to someone’s face out loud and in person?
Instagram is hoping to deter the nastiness with a new feature that will point out if you’re about to leave a mean comment.
The Facebook owned platform announced their plan to recognize mean comments with a new AI feature that analyzes what you’re about to post and let’s you know, “Hey, this isn’t very nice.”
Another feature to be implemented will give users the power to mute comments from different users without those users getting a notification they were muted (you can already mute account posts and stories you don’t wish to see without unfollowing the person).
While the theory of this is a great idea, how well will the actual execution of it be?
Once upon a time Jai worked for a teen and young adult call-in talk radio show and would post links to get-help topics on my Facebook Page. I can’t tell you how many times FB removed my posts or suspended my Page, saying I was guilty of using “bullying language.” That “bullying language” I kept getting cited for was along the lines of, “If you are struggling with [insert issue], please know you don’t have to navigate it alone. There is help. There is hope,” and I would include the link for more info.
Will IG’s new AI confuse encouragement with bullying? We shall see . . .
