Ideas to Keep Occupied During Self-Quarantine

So you are stuck at home . . . whether you are home more on weekends only because you still go into the office (or wherever your place of employment is) or who a pretty much kicking it at home 7 days a week, there are all kinds of things you can get into to help the time go by.

Go to your phone’s photo gallery and delete all of those accidental screenshots of your Home Screen, for starters.

Then, try tackling those 5,000 spam emails taking up space in your email account.

OK, so . . . what else?

Read a book – Have something on your shelf you have been meaning to read or stacked under a lamp as home decor on that side table in your living room or home office? Pick it up and get reading. Give it a couple chapters and if you are loving it . . . AWESOME! Now you have something to read. Not super into the book after giving it a chance? No worries. Skip to the last chapter, read it, and move on to the next book. No one has to know . . .

Tidy up your house – (do not roll your eyes at us) . . . You will be amazed if you tackle one room at a time, or even one section of one room at a time and see how much extra stuff you have accumulated that you either do not need, did not even realize you had, or both! Sort things out. Get organized. Dust and actually clean the surfaces and area. You’ll feel better afterwards and it is also kind of like you are getting a workout without even realizing it.

Sort through your clothes – This one kind of goes a long with the suggestion above, but go through your clothes and see what items you have not worn in years, what you probably will never wear again, and search out anything that is damaged that can be repaired or is better suited for the garbage can. Do a nice strong cleaning on the items that are still wearable you do not seem to want anymore and donate them to charity to help others.

Have your own wine tasting – You can sign up for one online or get your own vino tasting on with your own self. Make it a fun online group party with your friends by all getting the same bottles of wine and some snacks to go with, initiate a Zoom meeting and gather your friends.

Try your hand at gardening – Try your hand at growing some stuff. Try an outdoor garden or work on some herbs for inside your home. Maybe you have a green thumb, maybe not so much . . . but you have the time to at least try, and try, and try, and try again.

Channel your inner Inna Garten, Gordon Ramsay, or Julia Child – Cooking can be therapeutic, and when you make something on your own and it turns out to be good . . . well that is a straight up feeling of pure victory! You can go pick up your own ingredients or have them delivered, but give it a try. The cleaning up after cooking part typically is not super enjoyable (unless you are own of those people who like to clean and find hand washing dishes meditative), but if you clean as you cook instead of waiting to clean everything once you are done cooking and have a belly full of food, it will at least make it more tolerable. We have been seeing a lot of people making their own pasta lately . . . banana bread is really having a moment . . . and so is bolognese sauce. You can also try getting your beef bourguignon or coq au vin on . . . you have the time, after all.

Make your own at home spa – Get your special space set up for a relaxing bubble bath equipped with epson salt, candles and a glass of vino. Pump some of your favorite tunes and let the stress pent up in your muscles fade away. Toss on a face mask or throw some cucumbers on your eyes, and when your bath is over, give your face a good washing with you skin care items. The steam from your hot bath will have opened up your pours to you can hit your sink and really get a deep clean going. Follow up with moisturizer made for the skin on your face (please do not use body butter on your face). Jai’s favorite is pretty much anything from the Drunk Elephant line.

Connect with your friends and family – Hop on FaceTime and have some conversations with the people in your life you have been missing. Sure you can call them, but don’t you miss seeing their face? If you, or anyone you are trying to connect with, do not have an iPhone or tablet with iOS, then get the Duo app. It works with Android devices as well as iOS.

Get your karaoke on -You can hit up YouTube for free karaoke songs or other online services. Have fun, belt it out, and get funky. No one can see you except anyone else who is in your home . . . and you should get them in on this, too!
