How Artist Become Members

Country music fans seem to have one universal question, how do singers become members of the world famous Grand Ole Opry.  And the answer isn’t so cut and dry.  Throughout the 95 years of the Opry, you’ve had very successful artist not become members, you’ve had a few get fired (Hank Williams Sr being the best known) and some turn it down (Charlie Pride did the first time but the Opry was persistent).  But for some, they get asked, and that’s when the question comes, how does the process work.  And the skinny is, it’s totally different each and every time.  It’s not about how long you’ve been at it, or how many number ones you have.  There’s really no measurement on when, or if you get to become a member.  Charlie Daniels didn’t become a member until until 2008, Crystal Gayle became a member in 2017 even though her sister Loretta Lynn became a member in 1962.  But then on the other side of that, Chris Janson became the youngest member of the Opry in 2018.  So for me, I like the mystery, because it’s never about a numbers game or a political game, it’s all about what has been true for 95 plus years now, are you part of the fabric, or will be a part of the future as the Opry, through wars, floods, and since last year a global pandemic, going to help keep it going for another 95 years.  And with all that said, CONGRATS to Lady A because as of 1/21/21, they received their plaque that hangs backstage along with all the other members plaques, because they are the newest artist’s asked to be a part of what made country music famous, the Grand Ole Opry.
