Happy Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day, which has been celebrated on April 22nd since the very first one back in 1970. The day focuses on environmental causes and raises awareness of environmental protection and there are lots of different ways to celebrate.

“For me, every day is Earth Day,” says Leila Yassine, Rainforest Alliance’s global advocacy engagement manager. “But I think it’s really important to have this Earth Day as a yearly wake-up call for everyone.” Her favorite way to celebrate Earth Day is by taking a walk through nature, to be reminded of how beautiful and powerful it is.

Yassine suggests these simple ways for anyone to celebrate Earth Day:

Buy sustainable produce at the grocery store.
Since it’s a Monday this year, people could try a Meatless Monday. Skipping the meat for one day is good for our health, as well as the planet.
Everyday actions count too, like going to a local park or beach clean-up, or attending an Earth Day event in your area.
NASA also has a big goal for Earth Day. They want you – and everyone else on the planet – to celebrate with a selfie. They’re asking people to go outside and take a photo of themselves in their corner of the world, then post it to social media with the hashtag #GlobalSelfie. Bonus points if your pic includes a body of water, but they want to see the mountains, parks, sky and you, too.
