Feel Good Story: Woman Throws Birthday Parties for Homeless Kids

There’s a woman in Pennsylvania that started a charity, with efforts throw birthday parties for kids who are homeless.

Megan Yunn, a 33 year old in Pittsburgh, PA, started a charity called “Beverly’s Kids” after a 12 year old named Beverly made an impact on Megan’s life.

Megan use to run a youth program in Pittsburgh, and back in 2011 she was helping Beverly with her vocabulary homework when it was revealed that Beverly had never had a birthday party.

The vocab word that started the whole thing was “accustomed.” Megan used the word in an example by asking Beverly what people are “accustomed” to eating at birthday parties. The answer Megan was looking for was “birthday cake,” but Beverly had no idea because she’d never eaten birthday cake before, and never had nor been to a birthday party.

The story made Megan cry in her car on the way home, and she knew she had to do something for other kids who were missing out on having birthday parties.

A few months later, Megan had started the nonprofit called “Beverly’s Birthdays,” where she throws birthday parties for homeless kids.

Things really got rolling in 2012, and since then Megan has brought on about 200 volunteers, and helped over 30,000 kids have birthday parties (including presents)!

The thing about Beverly’s Birthdays isn’t really about birthdays, though. It’s so much more, with Megan saying, “strip away the birthday aspect, [it’s just] about letting children and their parents know they MATTER.”

In addition to kids’ birthdays, Beverly’s Birthdays also holds baby showers for women in shelters.  You can find more information, and get involved, at BeverlysBirthdays.org.
