Feel Good Story: Teen Throws Birthday Parties for Homeless Children

While most teens might be spending their free time at home or with friends, one teen is giving hers to others by throwing birthday parties.

When she’s not in school or studying, Tanvi Barman (17) throws birthday parties for children in the homeless community who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them.

The organization Tanvi started, called “No Birthday Left Behind,” has the high school senior traveling to different homeless shelters around the Bay Area to throw personalized parties for birthday kids.

Tanvi has been working on “No Birthday Left Behind” since she was in 8th grade and volunteered with her family at a homeless shelter.

“A birthday party is such a big experience for a child and I think it was one of my favorite memories growing up,” Barman said. “We all look forward to our birthdays ever year. We all do. And it’s sad that these children, who are just like us, don’t have the opportunity to have a birthday.” Tanvi shared with her local news.

Homeless shelters in the area will reach out to “No Birthday Left Behind” when a youngin’s birthday is coming up, and Tanvi will get to work planning the special day for the child, reaching out to local vendors for party food and entertainment along with donations.

Of the time commitment and efforts put towards “No Birthday Left Behind,” Tanvi shares she wouldn’t be able to make any of it happen without her parents’ support, saying “I think my parents are really the backbone help to this program. I think it would be very difficult to get around the city, drive to each city. And also, if I ever forget one thing, my parents are always there to back me up.”

Regardless of the help and support, “No Birthday Left Behind” is all Tanvi — fully developed and run from the kindness in her heart.
