Feel Good Story: Teacher Takes in Former Student with Special Needs After Father Passes Away

As if we didn’t already know just how much teachers care about their students, here’s a story that further exemplifies the point . . .

Chris Barrington is a 30 year old Waco, Texas resident with special needs who functions at about a 6 year old level.

His only care-giver was his dad, who sadly lost his battle with leukemia earlier this month, leaving Chris on his own.

Recently, police found Chris wandering down a highway alone. Because he no longer had any immediate family members, Chris gave police the name of a teacher he hadn’t talked to in years — Michell Girard.

Police reached out to Michell, who taught Chris for four years in junior high, after he recalled how nice she was.

After speaking with authorities and learning of her former student’s situation, Michell agreed to take Chris in while they figure out a more long-term solution.

However, when Michell learned the long-term solution for Chris was likely to be him ending up in an institution of some kind, she decided to file paperwork to take permanent custody of him.

When Michell learned former student had never celebrated Christmas or received any birthday gifts before, she threw Chris his very first birthday party!
