Feel Good Story: Students Surprise Beloved Janitor for 80th Birthday

Haze Mabry may hold the job title of janitor in a Georgia elementary school, but he’s a staple in the hearts of the kids and faculty he assists.

When kids aren’t feel well, Haze will help them to the nurse. If a student is having a tough day, Haze will help the feel better, and is always ready and available when the students want to share stories with him.

An Army veteran, Haze knows how to keep things tidy. While he was in service, he was known for always having the cleanest area and shiniest shoes.

Last week, while arriving to work at Pike County Elementary, Haze was greeted by almost 800 students lining the hallways, ready to surprise their beloved “Mr. Haze” for his 80th birthday.

Students sang at the top of their lungs “Happy Birthday,” blew on noisemakers, and even chanted “Mr. Haze! Mr. Haze!” as their beloved birthday guy walked down the halls, looking at banners made just for him and receiving birthday cards along his walk.

Haze was receiving so many birthday cards, in fact, he needed some students to follow behind him with buckets to help him collect everything.

One card read: “Mr. Haze, you are my sunshine.”

. . . and Haze feels the same way!
