Savannah Allen (22) had enrolled at UC Blue Ash College to pursue her dream of becoming a pediatric dental hygienist, but quickly realized there may be a big hurdle standing between her and accomplishing her career goals.
Born colorblind, Savannah shares, “I didn’t really know going into the program that it would be so important to be able to see lesions and to distinguish difference cavities and things that are very similar in color to either gum tissue or just enamel of the teeth.”
Realizing it was a big problem when an instructor pointed out all the spots Savannah was missing while scaling a patient.
Thinking she may have to drop out of the program because of her inability to correctly see color, Savannah confided in classmates about her condition.
Many were shocked to even think their friend and classmate had never truly seen the colors in our world, like the blue of the ocean or sky, green grass, etc.
Savannah’s friends and fellow classmates were not OK with the thought of her having to cancel her career goals because of her colorblindness, and decided to do something about it.
The encouraging group of students started doing their own research of treatments for colorblindness when they came across colorblind-assisted contacts and glasses, before making the big purchase of some pricey EnChroma glasses.
To help pay for the expensive glasses, Savannah’s classmates set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise the needed $400.
With that money, kind-hearted students surprised Savannah with the special glasses, and even caught her first multicolor experience on video.
This is a beautiful moment and a prime example of how a selfless act of kindness among peers can not only change someone’s life in such a profound way, but it’s also a gift that will keep on giving as it will now enable Savannah to continue with her goals to help others.
