There’s a high school choir teacher in Alabama who’s currently directing Lee High School’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
His name is Tyler Henderson, and his students LOVE him. There is something about Mr. Henderson that his students never knew, only recently learning . . . Mr. Henderson is colorblind.
Upon learning this news, his students wanted to do something special and help their favorite teacher fully enjoy the colorful show he’s helping them put on.
That’s when the Lee High School Thespian Group started a fundraiser with a very special intention: To buy Mr. Henderson a pair of enchroma glasses, which allows colorblind people to see red colors . . . something their beloved teacher has never been able to do.
Standing on the stage, Mr. Henderson read a heartfelt letter from his students, before being handed his special new glasses. Then, the crew broke into a song from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” and debuted a banner that read, “You helped us see our colors. Now we’re helping you see yours.”
(Hold on, we’re sobbing . . .)
Mr. Henderson told a local news outlet about the emotional gift, “For about 6 or 8 hours after I got the glasses, I had trouble putting them on without getting teared up.” He continues, “Partially because of the experience of it, partially because you have like this level of awareness about the world around you that you didn’t have before, which is a wild feeling.”
While the new glasses add brightness to Mr. Henderson’s experiences, it’s truly the students who light up his world.
