Feel Good Story: School Pulls Together to Help Beloved Custodian Afford Needed Surgery

Lee Hamilton, affectionately called “Mr. Lee,” holds the job of custodian at the Dallas-area Puster Elementary School, but is known more as a hard worker and a truly positive influence on the students.

Mr. Lee was on his way to having to use a wheelchair when he couldn’t afford the back surgery he would need to avoid the use of the chair. This would not only take him away from his job and the school, but also make his tasks of caregiver for his wife with MS all the more difficult.

That’s when students and teachers banded together to launch a fundraising effort for Mr. Lee to get the extensive back surgery, as well as medical bills and some living expenses while he recovers.

The “Stand by Mr. Lee” GoFundMe page had a goal set to raise $17,000 . . . and as of this posting, has garnered over $25.5K in financial gifts.

Mr. Lee told a Dallas-Fort Worth news outlet, “It’s overwhelming. I didn’t know I touched so many people. It’s been amazing, and I appreciate everything they did for me.”

The first surgery for Mr. Lee is scheduled for this week on Wednesday, March 20.
