Stacey Truman has been the cafeteria manager at Kingston Elementary School in Virginia Beach, VA for almost a decade, but only recently started a venture to encourage the students.
The students affectionately call it the “talking bananas,” where Stacey writes words of encouragement on bananas for the students.
Written on the bananas are words/quotes to inspire, like, “Never give up,” “You are wise!” and “Keep trying,” as well as much more.
Stacey told a local news outlet, “Most of [the messages] I came up with myself because I would just think about what you would tell a kid or what you would want to hear yourself.” Continuing, Stacey shares, “I do it for my kids at home, so why not bring it here and do it for them because they are like my kids.”
School principal Sharon Shewbridge posted a picture of the encouraging fruit to Twitter, where it started going viral.

The principal shares, “[Truman]’s almost embarrassed about all the attention . . . She just wanted it to be anonymous. But I said this is so simple and amazing — and it has such an impact on kids.” Principal Shewbridge continues, “It’s simple, but these words can help them be more courageous and realize that they are good enough . . . I hope that other schools see it’s an easy way to get a kind message to kids.”
