Sometimes right place at the right time isn’t enough if the person doesn’t have the right skills.
A computer teacher at All Saints Elementary in Bay City, Michigan started choking on a piece of muffin, but, thankfully, one of her fifth grade students knew what to do.
Fifth grader student, Dylan Paul, sprang into action when he noticed his teacher “doing the universal choking sign,” and unable to breathe.
Because of their size difference, Dylan knew he might not be able to help his teacher by performing the Heimlich maneuver, and instead performed chest thrusts.
Other students ran out to find other teachers or administrative staff to help, but by the time they got back, Dylan had already become a hero by getting the piece of muffin dislodged.
Principal Lisa Rhodus shared her praise for Dylan, saying, “I’m just so proud to think that he was able to react in a situtaion that couldn’t been very scary for fifth graders. It’s a scary situation and [he] reacted so quickly and we are very proud of him.”
Dylan says he’s just happy he could do something to help someone who has done so much for him, sharing, “I am very thankful for what she has done for me. So I think it kind of made it even.”
Even though Dylan’s mom is a nurse, he actually learned the technique on YouTube!
The heroic fifth grader continues, “There’s this YouTuber, Jaiden Animations. She made a video where she gave information on how to do the Heimlich maneuver.
The teacher he save, Karen Renko, has this to say, “I am so thankful to have had Dylan in the room at the time. His presence of mind and willingness to step up and help shows that he is wise beyond his years. Dylan is a real live hero.”
