Back in 1985, George Smith, a biology professor at the University of Missouri came up with a technique called the “phage display” that has revolutionized therapies involving viruses attacking bacteria.
In 2018, Professor Smith was honored with a Nobel Prize in Chemistry, an honor that comes with a $250,000 monetary prize.
However, Smith announced recently that hes giving ALL of the Nobel prize money to the University of Missouri in an effort to launch a new scholarship fund.
Here’s what’s even better, the school is following the professor’s lead and kicking in an additional $300,00, and making it a new tradition where they’ll donate $100,000 every time one of their faculty members win a Nobel Prize.
There was one request Professor Smith had for the school — He rides his bike to school every day, and requested his own reserved spot on the bike rack outside his office.
The university was more than happy to oblige.
