When it comes to stepping up and leaning in to help a child with a broken heart, here is a great example of how to do it . . .
A school resource officer usually stationed at elementary schools in Van Buren, Arkansas named Nick Harvey caught wind of a second grader, Avey Cox, whose dad had tragically passed away during the holidays.
It’s not easy to imagine being so young and losing a parent, and just how hard the loss of the most important man in her life has been on Avey. Then, things got a little hard last month . . . the school’s annual Father-Daughter dance was coming up.
Nick decided to step in and see if he could make things a little easier, even for one night, and escort the eight year old to the dance.
He shared, “I reached out to [her] mother . . . Her mom talked to [Avey] about it and, the next day, I formally asked if she’d be my date to the daddy-daughter dance.”
A thrilled Avey said yes, and they went together at the end of last month.
The second grader appreciated Nick’s kindness even shared, “It meant a lot because I actually got to go and see all my friends . . . and have lots of fun.”
Nick even got a corsage for Avey.
Nick has even extended the offer to escort Avey to the Father-Daughter dances for as long as she would like to go. While he does have three daughters of his own, the father says they’re too old for the dances and he would be more than honored to be Avey’s date do the annual dances at the school.
Now THIS is how you lean in and step up to help someone, especially when it comes to children. This story fills our hearts.
