Journey Huey had a rough start to her 8th birthday when she and her grandmother, Huli Huey, were in a car accident on the way to school.
The young lady in Wisconsin had spent a lot of time on Sunday night baking and decorating 16 cupcakes to share with her class the next morning.
Thankfully, Journey and her grandmother weren’t injured, but the cupcakes were a total loss.
Huli shares, “We were going down the highway and taking Jojo to school with her cupcakes for her birthday, and the next thing you know, we weren’t going down the road, we were going across the road.”
Sue Bolwerk with the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office came to the duo’s rescue, not only making sure the grandmother and granddaughter left the wreck safely.
“When Journey got out of the car, she was holding a pan full of cupcakes, and you could see that the cupcakes inside were thrown around,” Sue, who is the mother of a 9 year old, explains. “She mentioned that she was bringing the cupcakes for a treat, and one pan fell, but said, ‘That’s OK. I’ll just make more tonight, and we’ll just celebrate my birthday tomorrow at school.’”
Sue didn’t want the newly-turned 8 year old to have to wait until the next day to celebrate her birthday . . . so, after dropping Journey and Huli at the young lady’s school, she ventured to a nearby grocery store and bough enough cupcakes for Journey’s entire class.
The kindness of the officer brought Huli to tears, but as Sue tells it, “I guess I’ve spent my career doing these kinds of things. Stuff I don’t expect to be recognized for; this is just my job.” She continues, “She needed cupcakes on her birthday. I think she needed it on her birthday.”
