When one man risked losing his home, neighbors leaned in to help him in a big way.
Lamar Harris, an adult with special needs has lived in his Gloucester Township home his whole life, but over time, the family members who cared for him and handled the day-to-day tasks passed away.
His mother passed when Lamar was 8 . . . his grandmother when he was 12 . . . and over the last few years, Lamar lost his father and brother.
As a result of the deaths of his family members and caregivers, along with his reading deficits and inability to understand finances, Lamar fell behind on property taxes.
After neighbors learned a $50,000 lien was placed on Lamar’s home and was in imminent danger of foreclosure, they started a GoFundMe page to help.
With the municipal deadline approaching, the neighbors knew they needed to act fast . . . and, in less than two weeks, more than $50K was raised!
“All money donated will go into a bank account which has been set up to help Lamar’s housing issue,” shares the GoFundMe campaign organizers.
Once the taxes have been paid off, Lamar will need to prove he has a plan to pay future taxes, and neighbors are also working to find an attorney to advocate for him.
