Feel Good Story: Middle Schoolers Show Kindness to Five Year Old Birthday Boy

It’s safe to say the main goal of parenting is to raise kind and decent human beings.

Something Donette Mabes of South Brunswick, New Jersey says it’s a feat one never really knows “because you’re not watching them [at every moment].”

She’d always assumed her son was good, but her assumptions became verified recently when her 13 year old, Gavin Mabes, was caught on tape showing his true character.

Gavin was hanging with his buddies at an almost empty skate park when the middle school posse noticed 5 year old Carter Bruynell alone with his mom, celebrating his birthday.

Big groups of older kids tend to make Carter a little nervous, so his mom Kristen was prepared to pick up and leave the skate park if her son, who’s on the autism spectrum, became uneasy at any time.

Gavin decided to head over to the 5 year old birthday boy, with the rest of his middle school crew following, but not to make trouble . . . but, to start a friendship.

Kristen shares, “Gavin is just going around with [Carter] and making him feel special. And the rest of his friends kind of followed suit and then started singing Happy Birthday to him.” She continues, “That really blew me away, ’cause you just want to see the kindness in the world. And I wanted Carter to have a good birthday.”

It was such a great birthday in fact, the the local police department even responded to the whole scenario by throwing the group a pizza party.

Here’s where the story gets even better . . .

Since meeting 5 year old Carter, Gavin and his friends have continued to go out of their way to play with him.

It truly is a blissful parenting moment to see you child being treated so kindly, and a parenting win to know your kid treats others with kindness, even when you’re not watching.
