Feel Good Story: Man Dives Into River to Save Motorist

We love stories of people helping people . . . and sometimes that help is the difference between a life or death situation.

Andrew Lunn (52), a nurse at Anchorage Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Salisbury, Maryland, was arriving at work when he saw a vehicle drive right into the Wicomico River.

He knew he had to help, saying, “I didn’t have the option of waiting for 911 because within the response time, the car would have been underwater… I had to assess the situation to figure out the best way that both of us could have made it out of there alive.”

Andrew called on some of his coworkers, who called 911 and threw some life preservers into the water.

In the meantime, Andrew was telling the driver to unbuckle his seat belt and roll down his window. He then tossed a life preserver in the water then dove in, himself; and was able to pull the driver out through the window.

Captain Rich Kaiser with the Salisbury Police Department said the vehicle was parked near the river when the driver hit the gas without realizing it was shifted in reverse instead of drive.

It Andrew and his fellow coworkers hadn’t been there to help, the situation could have taken a tragic turn.

On coworker, Deborah Benton, shared, “It’s true heroism, honestly, to do that for someone that you don’t even know without even giving it a second thought.”

It was just huge teamwork right there. I mean … it was amazing,” Deborah continued.

The Salisbury Police Department praised Andrew’s actions in a tweet, stating, “Thanks to the quick thinking of an Anchorage Nursing Home employee, the 55 yo operator of this vehicle only suffered minor injuries as a result of accidentally backing into the Wicomico River from the Anchorage Nursing home side of the river.”
