When a 6 year old finished his last round of chemo treatment, he was greeted with the biggest, heart warming surprise from his classmates he never would have thought of.
John Oliver Zippay (now 6) had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at three years.
Around Halloween in 2016, John Oliver fell and hit his head — and when his face became discolored and the then three year old became extremely lethargic, so his parents took him to see a doctor.
Several blood tests later, John Oliver’s parents (Megan and John) received a middle of the night phone call urging them to get their little boy to the emergency room as soon as possible.
All signs were pointing to a form of leukemia.
The next few weeks, the the family (along with their older daughter) spent time in the hospital with John Oliver while he had blood transfusions, bone marrow biopsies, and several more tests.
The following years were filled with different procedures and various types of chemotherapy.
All of the treatments, along with their side effects, made it difficult for John Oliver to do things other kids his age get to do, plus he missed a lot of school.
Even with the inconsistency of being in class, John Oliver never fell behind with his learning.
On December 27th of 2019, John Oliver had his last round of chemotherapy, and got to celebrate by ringing the celebratory bell patients ring when finishing treatments, surrounded by the doctors and nurses who cared for him over the past three years.
John Oliver’s first day back at school, after finishing his final treatment was a special one.
All of his classmates at St. Helen Catholic School in Newbury, Ohio gave him a standing ovation, cheers and high fives to welcome their beloved peer back to class, and to celebrate him finishing treatments.
Principal Patrick Gannon relayed, “Him having to miss some of the time was tough, but the class was just so happy to see him come back.”
