Feel Good Story: Journalism Student Helps Homeless Man Go Back to College

Proof that it’s never too late to go back to school . . .

David Carter may be in his mid-60s, and homeless off and on for the last few decades, but he’s a very intelligent man.

He’d been studying at the University of Texas when he dropped out in 1975.

Since then, David’s struggled with addiction and schizophrenia, having to beg for money just to survive.

Cut to last year, when Ryan Chandler, a journalism student interviewed David for a class assignment on the homeless community in Austin. Ryan’s work got published, then the university’s official alumni newspaper did a story as well.

Now, 44 years after leaving college, David is going back, all thanks Ryan’s help.

The two were able to track down David’s old transcripts and learned he’s only 64 credit hours away from a Fine Arts degree. That’s about a year’s worth of classes, so Ryan petitioned the school to let him back in, and last month they DID!

Originally, Ryan and David were hoping to get a Pell Grant to cover the homeless man’s tuition, but then, an anonymous alumni member who learned of David’s story leaned in to help, offering to pay the full tuition.

David will be majoring in studio art, and his first class starts this week.
