While there are tens of thousands of veterans living in nursing homes, the Medical Foster Home program — launched by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs — is working to change that.
The program has been working with families who want to open their homes so that our nation’s heroes who are unable to live alone can live out the rest of their lives with foster families.
The DVA website states, “A Medical Foster Home can serve as an alternative to a nursing home . . . for veterans who require nursing home care but prefer a non-institutional setting with fewer residents.”
Launched in 2008, the program now has a presence in 44 states, allowing foster families to welcome up to three veterans into their homes and families to give them a more comfortable, and loving, environment.
It’s a long-term commitment with veterans residing in their foster homes, and genuinely being part of the family and loved on for the remainder of their lives.
