Robert Leibowitz, a father of five, was suffering from chronic kidney failure earlier this year, and his only hope was to receive a new kidney. The outlook wasn’t looking good, when Robert had an idea – – – to make and wear and t-shirt stating he needed a kidney, also including his blood type and phone number.
Leibowitz wore the shirt on a family vacation to Disney World, hoping some of that Walt Disney magic would rub off on him, and that it did.
Someone saw the shirt, snapped a photo and posted to social media . . . and then it went viral, catching the attention of Richard Sully.
Sully shares, “I figured a guy that desperate to put his cellphone on his shirt at Disney really wants to spend more time with his kids and not die.”
Though they were total strangers, that wasn’t enough to stop Sully from boarding a Greyhound bus to make a 740 mile trip from Indiana to New York to see if he was a match for Leibowitz – – – which he WAS A MATCH!
Of the stranger-turned-life-saving friend, Leibowitz says, “He’s the greatest guy in the world. He’s my hero. My family loves him.”
Now, Leibowitz and Sully are doing the National Kidney Foundation’s fundraising walk for the first time, with a goal of showing people just how easy it is to give.
