Miles Herndon may only be three years old, but this little human has a big heart.
For his 3rd birthday, in lieu of a traditional party with gifts, Miles asked his guests to bring canned food for the food pantry his family started to help those in need.
The family from Boise built a small food pantry that’s free to those in need of food and/or basic sanitary items.
Miles’ mom, Macy Miller, shares, “Birthdays are a time of giving, and we don’t need that much stuff. We don’t need the amount of gifts we get, so we were trying to find ways to direct the kindness to where it was more needed. This year, Miles wanted to build something. So that’s what we did for his third birthday.”
With just a $40 budget and recycled materials, the family built a Little Free Pantry for their neighborhood, which now stands next to a community garden.
The family keeps the food pantry stocked with canned food, baby items and other necessities, asking neighbors to pitch in whenever they can.
In addition to their neighbors helping out, a local kids’ dentist has donated hundreds of toothbrushes.
The family also hopes their Little Free Pantry will inspire other families to build a pantry in their neighborhoods to help more community members in need.
