Feel Good Story: Couple Uses Supermarket Shopping Spree to Donate Items to Food Bank

A couple in Alberta, Canada won a supermarket shopping spree held by The Grocery People, allowing them 50 seconds to grab whatever they could, and what they got they could keep.

Chantel Leroux and Ryan Warren were beyond thrilled when they were selected for the supermarket shopping spree, and Chantel was immediately thinking about grabbing all sorts of things for her cupboard, but then had another thought.

“What a great opportunity to give,” Chantel, who works in social services, shared.

Before making their mad dash down the aisles, Chantel and Ryan reached out to a food bank to find out what they needed most, then did a walk-thru of the store to see where everything was . . . so when that clock started ticking last weekend, the couple already had their plan of action mapped out.

Of the game-plan, Ryan says, “We knew we had to go non-perishable, so we could kind of [cross] the meat aisle off our list. We were going for vegetables, tomato paste, coffee . . . that sort of thing?

The duo got almost $600 worth of items in their cart; and even though the store had capped the shopping spree at $500, they bent their own rules because the items were going to a good cause — to help other people.

. . . But wait, there’s more!

Ryan, who runs a window-tinting business, reached out to several car dealerships he works with to see if they’d be interested in donating to the cause, and was able to present the food bank with an additional check for $1,500!
