Feel Good Story: Church Erases Medical Debt for Neighbors in Need

Paying off medical debt is a daunting task, but one church — through the help of a non-profit organization — was able to help nearly 2,000 families clear out over $1.8 MILLION in debt.

Grand Rapids First in Wyoming, Michigan purchased the medical debt for less than a penny on the dollar through the non-profit group RIP Medical Debt — an orginzation who has abolished more than $624 million in medical debt since it’s inception in 2014.

RIP Medical Debt was able to eliminate the medical debt of 1,899 families using the monetary gifts raised by the church.

Sam Rijfkogel, pastor of the church, said, “They owe us nothing. We can be peacemakers. Just as Jesus forgave and canceled the debt of our sins, we also canceled the debt of those in our community.”
