Feel Good Story: 104 Year Old Veteran Receives 70,000 Valentine’s Day Cards

“Major Bill” is a U.S. Marine veteran who will be celebrating this year’s Valentine’s Day surrounded by love from many kind strangers all around the world.

His actual name is William White (104), who earned a Purple Heart in World War Two, and he is a very beloved resident of an assisted living facility in Stockton, Callifornia.

Another resident decided to launch a big campaign on social media to bring in greetings of love to honor Major Bill, called “Operation Valentine.”

The goal was a simple ask for 100 cards — one card for every one of Major Bill’s birthdays (but rounded down to make it a solid one hundred).

The response was astounding!

In total, Major Bill received over 70,000 letters of love and well wishes from across the globe!

The letters came from each and every U.S. state and many foreign countries. Abigail Sawyer (9), Major Bill’s great-granddaughter, even delivered a bundle of cards from her class!

There were so many kind letters that came in, Major Bill couldn’t possibly open each and every one on his own, and the help of his family still wasn’t proving to be enough . . . so they had to enlist volunteers to help.

For Major Bill, this isn’t just an act of love nor appreciation for him, it’s an honor to each and every U.S. service member and all veterans who passed away too soon to hear the level of gratitude so many have for them.

One card from a woman whose late grandfather also fought in World War Two, and would be 100 years young this year has he still been alive, shared in her letter, “I miss him so much. By sending you this card, I feel as though I am sending my grandfather a card.”

Major Bill has been overwhelmed with the kind words, love and support from these letters that arrived for him, saying, “It’s something Ive never heard of or seen. All of a sudden here, like a ton of bricks. I’m sort of speechless.”
