I am from a generation where technology was a big part of growing up. It felt like almost every week something new was being invented and put on the market, especially ways to communicate.
One of the ways to communicate was a pager. A Pager is a an electronic device, usually worn on one’s person, that receives messages and signals the user by vibrating or beeping. Most pagers just displayed a phone number that was trying to get ahold of you. More advanced pagers had voice messages that would be displayed by text.
When I was 7th & 8th grade I had a pager for the summer time. My friends and I would get up, ride bikes, play sports and just hang out every day. Well, my parents needed to get ahold of me somehow because we would ride our bikes all over town. Once I would get a page from either my mom or dad I had 10 minutes to get to a phone and check-in. These were the days when you had to carry quarters so you can use a pay phone.
Although, pagers are a thing of the past, doctors still use them on a daily basis. Evidently, cell phones don’t work well in hospitals but pagers do. All the equipment in hospitals prevents cellphones from working properly but it doesn’t affect pagers the same way. Since hospitals are so big it’s hard to find doctors sometimes, that’s why they use pagers.
My goal is to bring back the pager, along with the flip phone.
Here is an old tv ad from 1994 for a Motorola Pager…
