Breakfast Matters if You’re Trying to Lose Weight

Many health specialists already push the belief that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and even more so if you’re trying to lose weight…. but only if you’re eating the right things.

Whether you’re trying to get fit for health, an event or simply vanity’s sake, here are the best and worst foods to eat for breakfast when trying to lose weight:

WORST FOODS:

  • Instant Oatmeal – It tends to have a lot of added sugar and salt, it’s more processed, and there’s not much fiber.
  • Sugary Cereal – Even healthy looking ones can still be hiding a lot of sugar.
  • Waffles & Syrup – This is just sugar on top of sugar on top of sugar, and almost no fiber.
  • Orange Juice – Super misleading, because many of us would think a glass of OJ would be beneficial for our health. However, most brands are processed at really high temps that it kills a lot of the nutrients. So, unless you’re juicing fresh oranges yourself, it’s basically just a glass of orange liquid sugar.
  • Bagel & Cream Cheese – Eating a plain bagel is the equivalent of eating four slices of bread. Plus that cream cheese is stocked with saturated fat. If you can’t do without your morning bagel, a better option would be to eat half of a whole wheat bagel with avocado on top instead.
  • Pop-Tarts – They’re sugar on top of sugar, filled with sugar.
  • Flavored Yogurt – A whole lot more added sugar and not as many health benefits as you would think. A good fix is to have plain yogurt with some fresh fruit mixed in.

BEST FOODS:

  • Eggs With more than 20 key nutrients, eggs are a YES! Two eggs have about 12 grams of protein, which helps control insulin levels. Did you know that when your insulin spikes, your body will start storing calories as fat?!
  • Greek Yogurt – It’s high in protein and low in calories. Just make sure you’re not choosing one with added sugar. If you’re looking to zhoosh it up, add some fresh fruit and nuts.
  • Protein Smoothie – This can be tricky because it all depends on the ingredients you’re choosing. Some folks overdo it and wind up turning their “healthy” breakfast into a total calorie bomb.
  • Baked Beans – Ummmm, OK, so this one is definitely a different choice for breakfast, but apparently is super common in England. Baked beans are good because they’re almost a perfect combination of carbs and protein.
