Actress Selena Gomez Announces Bipolar Disorder, and She’s Not Alone

With more of an emphasis on mental health, and the stigma behind “therapy” being a dirty word, more people are speaking their truth and sharing their stories in an effort to help others and remind all of us that we are not alone in our struggles.

Actress Selena Gomez has shared in the past about health issues, such as Lupus which also attributed to a kidney transplant, as well as suffering from depression and what she once deemed a debilitating anxiety disorder.

Now, the 27 year old performer is getting more candid about her mental health struggles by publicly sharing her bipolar diagnosis.

Late last week, the Monte Carlo singer joined Miley Cyrus on Miley’s Instagram Live “Bright Minded: Live” (for the final episode of the social media based series) and shared that being more informed about her mental health and mental illness helped her better cope with what she’s been dealing with.

(Selena’s segment starts around the 32:30 mark.)

More and more celebrities are opening up about their life struggles, because sharing our stories with each other help us cope, and help others not feel so alone. Sharing helps all of us to not feel so alone.

Other celebrities who have shared their bipolar diagnosis are Jimmie Allen, Mariah Carey, Carrie Fisher, Bebe Rexha, Mel Gibson, Demi Lovato, Russell Brand, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halsey, and David Harbour (from Stranger Things).

Whether it’s a story of loss or trauma, mental health, miscarriage, abuse or more . . . celebs are just like us and go through what so many of us go through as well. Please know you’re not alone.
