Spring Brings Baby Birds to Clarksville

Have you ever had a bird choose a nesting place at your house to have babies? It’s a fascinating process. Especially because this nest was made in a faux plant from Hobby Lobby. LOL

When we happened to hang this fake plant on a hook on the front porch we would have no idea the show of nature that was to come. It began when my husband mentioned the curious birds flying to the fake plant one day. About a week later I noticed the twigs hanging over the edge. Yup, a nest.

We soon saw one egg. We watched Mama Finch nesting and wiggling. We had no idea that there was even more than one egg. One day when she went for food my husband peeked and saw 3 eggs.

Day and night she sat on this plant. Through driving rain, winds that sent her swinging and circling, and calm days. We couldn’t believe it when we thought we saw tiny beaks emerging. Then feedings. Both from Mama and occasionally Papa Finch who stood so proudly next to them.

We were concerned when one day we didn’t see Mama return but it was all part of the process. They were getting too big to cover and they didn’t need her warmth anymore. Still, mam and Papa would constantly swoop in and feed the babies.

Now their feathers are growing so fast and they keep stretching their wings. I have a feeling they are about to try flying in about a week or so. I wonder if they’ll stay close by. We’ll wonder every time we see a finch if it’s one of the FIVE babies that were born in that fake plant on the porch. Mama and Papa Finch did such a good job.

I wish I could tell them how very proud we are of how well they took care of these babies. What an experience to see. The best show on Earth!
