CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Northeast High School football team is back from the dead period and preparing for the 2024 season. While last year may not have been ideal for the Eagles, new head coach Deonte Weston is looking to re-establish a traditional powerhouse in the mid-state. His message to his squad? Win every day.
The Northeast Eagles went 1-9 in 2023, with their lone win coming over cross-town rival Northwest. Ever since then, the Eagles have been working to turn that record around, with former head coach Sam Lipsey starting the process, and Weston picking up where he left off.
“Coach Lipsey already had a great plan in motion, and we’re just building on that,” said Weston. “This is traditionally one of the best programs in the mid-state, and we want to get back to that. We want to be disciplined on the field and in the classroom, because that translates to wins.”
As for the on-field product, the Eagles will run a high-tempo offense led by senior quarterback Phoenix Love. Weston aims to have a balanced attack both in the air and on the ground, but wants his team to by physical in all aspects.
“I preach three things: playing hard, playing fast and playing physical,” said Weston. “We want to get up and down the field, throw the ball around, and still establish the run.”
The Eagles understand they have a lot of work to do to climb the ranks in 6A Region 7. However, Weston’s message to his team is to win the day every single day, both with performance on the field, and with how you carry yourself off the field.
“Our message is to win the day,” said Weston. “That is not just on the football field, it includes winning at home, winning in the classroom, having good character, and being responsible when nobody else is looking. That’s what winning the day is for us.”
