CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The man who was hit and killed on Interstate 24 Wednesday night in Clarksville was trying to cross the highway to assist people who were in a separate wreck.

At 9:44 p.m., Rex Wein, 66, of Minnesota was driving eastbound on I-24 when he witnessed a crash just south of the Kentucky state line, according to a preliminary report from Tennessee Highway Patrol obtained by Clarksville Now news partner Dash 10 Media.

Wein pulled over on the right shoulder and parked. He and his wife ran across the two eastbound lanes to check on the occupants of the crash. His wife made it safely to the left shoulder, but Wein was struck in the left lane by a 2009 Honda Ridgeline. Wein was pronounced dead at the scene, according to THP.

The driver of the Honda pulled over immediately after the crash. No charges are pending.
