OAK GROVE, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Warrants for the men arrested in the disappearance of 20-year-old Rossview High School graduate Justin Sawyer indicate he was killed as part of a robbery.

Sawyer was first reported missing on Dec. 19, and on Jan. 5, the Clarksville Police Department announced that Sawyer’s car had been recovered. Records obtained by Clarksville Now from the District Court of Christian County, Kentucky, reveal that Sawyer’s car was found in Georgia.

Three men were arrested: Dawuan Davis, 20, of Clarksville; Marquell Devont’e Sims, 22, of Oak Grove; and Gene “Doug” Henry, 36, of Oak Grove.

Both Davis and Sims were charged with robbery, kidnapping (with serious physical injury) and assault. Sims was released from the Christian County Jail on Wednesday, Jan. 20 with an ankle monitor, pending results from the grand jury hearing. Davis’ case was also sent to the grand jury, however he remains incarcerated at the Christian County Jail.

Henry was charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence, and he was released on his own recognizance awaiting his hearing.

While Sawyer’s body has not been found, KSP has said he is believed to be dead.

What they told police

On Dec. 17, Davis and Sims were looking to purchase marijuana, so Davis contacted Sawyer, according to the court records.

Sims told investigators that when Sawyer pulled into Newton Place Apartments on 100 Mandarin Drive in Oak Grove, where the pair were located, Davis handed Sims a ski mask and told Sims they were going to rob Sawyer. Davis got in the front passenger seat of Sawyer’s car, and Sims got the rear passenger side.

Sims told investigators that, without saying anything, Davis shot Sawyer in the leg and then told Sawyer to drive. Sawyer continued driving for a little over 3 miles to the Shell gas station on Kentucky Route 115 in Oak Grove. Davis then shot Sawyer in the other leg and made him get out of the car, according to the records.

The investigation led Kentucky State Police to surveillance footage that showed Sawyer’s white Honda Civic pull up next to a gas pump at the Shell. The court records state that the footage shows Sawyer’s car sitting in that spot at the pump for about an hour and 15 minutes.

Surveillance footage

On the footage, investigators witnessed movement inside the car, and after some time, the front passenger door and driver’s door both opened. The records state Davis was seen getting out of the car first, and he walked around the rear of the car to the driver’s door, where he could be seen reaching into the car.

Davis is then seen helping Sawyer out of the car, but Sawyer gets caught on the seatbelt. After Davis untangles Sawyer from the seatbelt, Sawyer is seen collapsing to the ground, at which point Davis tries to lift him toward the driver’s side rear door. Then Sims, with his ski mask on, gets out and helps Davis get Sawyer into the back seat.

Sawyer’s car, now driven by Davis, was then seen leaving the Shell station. However, as the car came to a stop at an intersection and was waiting in traffic to turn back onto Route 115, Sims got out and walked across the street to the Pilot Truck Stop. Sawyer’s car was then seen getting on Interstate 24, headed eastbound.

Some time later, the court records state, Davis arrived at 209 Pyle Drive in Oak Grove, where Henry was located. There appears to be no Pyle Drive in Oak Grove, however there is a Pyle Lane in nearby Hopkinsville.

Henry told KSP investigators that Sawyer was dead when he helped Davis move Sawyer from the back seat of his car to the trunk.

The car was later found in Georgia. The records don’t specify where in Georgia.
