CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Two brothers were killed after an 11-hour standoff with Clarksville Police Tuesday night that also resulted in four officers being struck by gunfire. A hostage was also shot and injured.

According to preliminary information released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the incident ended with a shooting just after 12:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the area of Union Hall Road and White Oak Road.

At about 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Clarksville officers executed arrest warrants at the location for two men: 33-year-old Leonard Michael Green and 31-year-old Brandon Lee Green, charging each with aggravated burglary. The brothers barricaded themselves in an apartment with a hostage, leading to several hours of negotiations with Clarksville officers, the TBI said.

The situation escalated when officers entered the home, and gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the Green brothers being shot and killed and the hostage being shot and injured. Four Clarksville officers were also struck by gunfire during the incident, but none sustained life-threatening injuries.

No information has been released on the condition of the hostage.

“TBI agents continue to work to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews,” the TBI said. “Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney general for his review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters; that decision rests with the district attorney general requesting TBI’s involvement.”

The officers injured have not been named.

About the Green brothers

Both of the Green brothers have criminal histories in Montgomery County, according to records gathered by Clarksville Now.

Leonard Green has had multiple arrests on charges including domestic assault, driving violations, evading arrest and contempt of court. In one high-profile incident in February 2019, while driving on a revoked license he crashed into stopped traffic on Ashland City Road then tried to flee, leading police on a 1-mile foot chase.

Most recently, he was charged in October with violating probation. In that instance, he was charged with aggravated assault and vehicle burglary. He pleaded down to domestic assault. He admitted to the violation of probation in March this year.

Brandon Green has several arrests on his record, including on charges of aggravated assault, evading arrest and stalking, according to state and county records.

How standoff started

The multi-hour standoff had surrounding neighborhoods rattled. One neighbor said she heard gunshots as police were surrounding the suspect Tuesday afternoon. She also said her husband was outside when gunfire erupted, and he had to hide behind an apartment building.

Officers set up a perimeter in the area and blocked traffic on Needmore Road between Wilma Rudolph Boulevard and Trenton Road.

Negotiators stayed in contact with the suspects throughout the incident, trying to get them to come out peacefully.

At about 3:30 p.m., parents with children in the nearby Just For Kids St. Bethlehem daycare center were called to pick up their children. Several parents arrived and waited for over an hour, but the scene was blocked off. Police said a bus was being arranged to bring to kids out. At about 5:10 p.m., a bus from Just For Kids daycare arrived with the children, and they were released to their parents.

More gunshots

At about 6:45 p.m., additional shots were fired, according to residents nearby. Then, at around 1 a.m. early Wednesday, residents reported hearing several gunshots and a bang.

At about the same time, LifeFlight was called to Clarksville to pick up a 30-year-old male with gunshot wounds to the right arm, both legs and abdomen, according to Clarksville Now news partner Dash 10 Media. LifeFlight picked up the patient at Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville.

It wasn’t known Wednesday afternoon whether that patient was the hostage or one of the Green brothers.

During the next couple of hours, agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) arrived.

At about 4:30 a.m., police issued a statement that after additional gunfire involving Clarksville Police, the incident is over.
