‘Elle’ editors defend Melissa McCarthy cover

‘Elle’ editors defend Melissa McCarthy cover

'ELLE' TAKES HEAT: The magazine says it wasn't purposefully trying to cover up Melissa McCarthy's full figure. Photo: Associated Press

Editors at Elle magazine have defended their decision to cover up actress Melissa McCarthy on the front of the latest issue, despite criticism that they are purposefully trying to hide her fuller figure.

The “Bridesmaids” star is featured on the cover of the fashion magazine’s November issue, as part of the annual Women in Hollywood celebration.

In the photograph, McCarthy is bundled up in a winter coat, which readers have deemed as pure ‘sizeism’ – because on alternate covers, Reese Witherspoon flaunts her body in a fitted black dress, while The Descendants star Shailene Woodley shows off skin in a black swimsuit.

In response to the backlash, editors at the high-fashion publication are defending their styling decision, as well as their choice to feature McCarthy on the cover.

A statement reads: “On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover. We are thrilled to honor her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year.”

This isn’t the first time the curvy McCarthy has gained attention for her weight – this summer, fans in the U.K. were outraged after film chiefs appeared to digitally slim down the actress in a promotional poster for the comedy “The Heat.”
